The Principles of Moving and Handling People (Northern Ireland)

Moving and handling and Manual Handling injuries among staff working in the healthcare sector remain a significant factor to be considered. In order to try to address this issue, various schemes have been introduced to help to minimise the risks associated with Moving and handling and Manual Handling activities. Therefore, by combining training of different types, it is possible to ensure key information is made available to those most at risk of injury.

The information within this programme (and wider approach to moving and handling training) has been welcomed across the healthcare sector as it can help to support a more effective and consistent approach to moving and handling provision and ultimately contribute to improvements in the health and well-being of staff.

This online programme covers information pertinent to the following key themes:

  • Health and Safety
  • Moving and handling
  • Injuries
  • Causes of injuries
  • Effects of injuries
  • Avoiding injuries
  • Legislation
  • Ergonomics and Risk Assessment
  • Principles of Safer handling
  • Team handling
  • The Use of Equipment
  • Communication and Safer handling

These main themes need to be separately supported by the delivery of Face to Face training by appropriately qualified individuals, as this will enable trainees to also demonstrate their competence and be assessed carrying out practical elements within the various topics.
